The Bible says that God created Eve from Adam’s rib. Does that mean we are joined at the ribs? Or does it mean he didn’t like the idea of the vagina, where a sperm and egg joined to produce a baby carried by a woman for 9 months. As women carry life on earth and provide the environment.
Or does it mean this story was manufactured by men, not God to ensure they rule over women and keep them barefoot, pregnant and without resources or opinion in the life and running of the world.
Why didn’t God create two ribs at the same time, a male and female one? It would have saved us from hundreds of years of patriarchy that we are still living with now. It would have communicated that men and women are equals and have an equal say in how the world is run. We would have functioned as a cooperative partnership, instead of this nonsensical “I am the leader and you are the servant” that has characterized our existence spilling over to our work life from home.
Imagine a work world where instead of Ceos, Billionaires and other unsavoury personnel the workforce was run as a Cooperative where leaders were elected and instead of being owners they were stewards. The people with the best skills were elected to the various positions. Inventors were helped to make their dreams possible. And major decisions were made jointly by elected comittees. Rivalry only existed between people based on creativity and productivity. Money would flow equally to all along with contributions to society as a whole for infrastructure, education, healthcare and governance. Where there was no need for an oversized political government machine because everyone was happy and respected with their lot in life and greed was non-existent. The raison d’être of living would be to serve and exude kindness in the world.
But no, WE have been taught for millennia that Adam came first and his rib made the world happen so he is the boss. Even a five year old might find that hard to believe, but adults have swallowed this explanation whole and based the establishment of society on this principle because supposedly God said so.
Unless we give up this premise and start viewing the bible as a beautiful mythology story and not the literal truth, nothing will change. And today’s world is the extreme caricature of this belief.
The creation stories of Indigenous people include turtles and ravens and beautiful as they are, adult people tell them to their children, but don’t form societies based on them.
In the Ojibwe oral tradition the Creator had cleansed the world of feuding peoples in order to begin life anew. Some animals survived the flood, such as the loon, the muskrat and the turtle. And no hierarchal system was set up based on this. In the Indigenous tradition there is cooperation and elders are consulted when major decisions need to be made. But today, tradition is influenced by white peoples social systems.
Maybe we could take cleanse the world part to heart, and if a flood, fire or extreme cold spell doesn’t rectify the problem by Mother Nature, then we can tax the greedy fuckers who want to run the world and are doing it through wars, killings, beheadings and dictators and their goons, and jail them all.
