In case anyone was wondering.... My series of paintings called Half Moon are a juxtaposition of expressionistic art about our everyday reality and abstract design that is intended to lift it to another more conceptual level. I use either text and numbers to achieve this or abstracted floral designs. The viewer is made to look longer when deciphering the text than they otherwise might and it causes them to conceptualize about the meaning of the work. Sometimes a first glance gives way to quick judgements and a turning away before it is actually absorbed and thought about by a viewer. I believe art needs beauty as well as communicating a message. Often my art has a social-political point that might be difficult for someone used to only looking for beauty in art. The conceptual design part of my painting is meant to keep them looking longer so that the message gets communicated. I believe my paintings have that surface tension that creates an elastic tendency of a fluid surface to move between the figures in the work and the abstract design. Why is the number seven lucky--even holy--in almost every culture? Why do we speak of the four corners of the earth?
