Buddhist practice initially focusses on the individual in helping him to overcome suffering Eventually though it really leads to forgetting the self and a realization that to help oneself one needs to help everyone because we are all interconnected. And when you realize that, corporate greed and narcissism becomes abhorrent to you.
You realize that you are not separate from the people living in the street. In other words the practice of mindfulness was founded to develop compassion, not just a stress reliever from untenable situations. Mindfulness in its proper use would help you realize how those situations need to change.
In other words navel gazing becomes an eye into the world, into right living, thinking and action.
