Alice Neel’s art is one of my very favourite because I realized early on that it said more about life in fewer lines than the traditional painters. Technique is good but it is less important in art than what the artist wants to express. Feelings, mood and the mystery of humanity is what interests me in art.
Alice exposes people’s real personas and social life of our times.
She did not become a mainstream painter until later in life because she did not paint what was fashionable.
People are more interested these days in communicating with their IPhone than each other. Deep communication with, and understanding of a human being in art is almost obsolete.
Like Alice I try to express the emotion, mood and character of figures. The mystery behind their lives. Often there is humour in what Alice portrays. She understands the absurdity of life and yet knows the importance of it. When I observe people I often see that there is humour in how they attempt to live their lives.
